Week of April 6-10
Week One
Probuditi!
by Chris Van Allsburg
For his birthday, Calvin’s mother gives him two tickets to see Lomax the Magnificent (magician and hypnotist extraordinaire!). Even though Mama hints that his little sister, Trudy, would love to go, Calvin doesn’t hesitate to invite his friend Rodney instead.
The boys return home greatly impressed by the magician’s performance. When Calvin’s mother goes out, she leaves him in charge of Trudy. It’s a job Calvin dislikes because his sister does not want to be left out of anything. So Calvin and Rodney include her—by making her the first subject for their own spinning hypnotizing machine.
The machine works! But who will have the last laugh?

Let's Make a Color Spinner!
It may not hypnotize, but it looks like magic!
Materials: Thick paper (tag board), coloring method of your choice in primary colors (red, yellow and blue), something round to trace, pencil, scissor, and ruler (optional).
How to Make Secondary Colors by Using Primary Colors.
Red + Yellow = Orange
Yellow + Blue = Green
Blue + Red = Purple
Red + Yellow = Orange
Yellow + Blue = Green
Blue + Red = Purple
Let's Get Started!
Gather your materials. I don't have tagboard but I have a paper plate! (Close Enough)
Using a pencil, trace something round onto your tagboard. I used a tape roll.
Now, fold your circle in the other direction. You should have a + in the middle of your circle.
Color in the circle with alternating colors.
|
Cut out your circle. Go over the creases with pencil (optional).
Now, poke a hole in the middle of your spinner. Ask an adult if you need help. I did it with a pencil.
Spin the pencil between your hands. Do you see the orange?
I flipped the circle over and did the same thing with yellow and blue to make green. I didn't like this result as much. Maybe you can think of a way to make it work better?
|
Fold your circle in half. It can be a challange since there are no corners to match-but do your best.
Choose the Secondary color you want to make. I want Orange, so I chose yellow and orange.
Put the pencil tip through the middle of the spinner.

Earth Day Inspired Owl
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22. Established in 1970, Earth Day is a day of education and awareness about environmental issues. The day was intended to demonstrate support for environmental protection of our planet.
Endangered Animals
An endangered animal is one that is at risk of becoming extinct or at risk of no longer being in existence. Dinosaurs are the largest group of animals to have ever become extinct.

How To Draw A Simple Burrowing Owl
Draw an oval. My oval is a little thinner at the top, for the head. I also slanted mine a bit.
Add a triangle beak.
Add some long legs.
|
Add a long stretched out V for the Owl's brow.
An oval wing.
And pointy tallons (toes). I didn't leave enough room at the bottom of my paper. Oops.
|
Two round eyes.
Half an oval on the other side of it's body.
Add curved lines for soft textured feathers.
