Student Portfolios
Each student in our school has their very own portfolio that is kept in the art room.
When I first began teaching (a long time ago) I would send home art work only to find that is was folded and shoved in the bottom of student backpacks. Some pieces got destroyed and others never saw the light of day. This problem was solved with the introduction of student portfolios (large tag board folders). Student art work is kept neatly in a decorated portfolio that is sent home at the end of the school year. Portfolios are labeled with the child's name, grade and assigned teacher so it can be neatly stored at home as well. While construction of 500 portfolios every year is quite a task, I have found that the benefits are huge. Our students have taken ownership of organizing and completing their own work. The children are responsible for passing out work, collecting it neatly, organizing it and putting it away. Our kids are awesome!!!
